Ireland’s First Satellite Video Call Marks Step Change in Mobile Coverage

A recent demonstration by Vodafone Ireland, using technology from AST SpaceMobile, has highlighted a major leap forward in mobile connectivity: a live video call made via satellite using a standard smartphone.

The significance lies not in the satellite itself, but in the device. The call was completed without any specialist hardware or modifications, demonstrating the growing maturity of direct-to-device (D2D) communications.

This capability has the potential to eliminate traditional “not spots” by extending coverage beyond terrestrial networks—reaching rural areas, coastlines, and other hard-to-serve locations.

In Europe, delivery of this technology is being coordinated through Satellite Connect Europe, which holds the exclusive rights to AST SpaceMobile’s services across the region. Working in partnership with mobile network operators, the model enables satellite connectivity to be integrated into existing networks rather than replacing them.

While challenges remain around capacity, latency, and regulatory alignment, the direction of travel is clear. What began with SMS has progressed through voice—and now video—bringing the industry closer to seamless, ubiquitous mobile coverage.

For operators and users alike, the message is simple: the era of “no signal” is coming to an end.
